House in Arta Terme, Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Wine Districts

Friuli-Venezia Giulia's wine district is relatively small compared to the rest of Italy. However, its producers rank among the best for white wines, and wonderful red wines are produced as well (1, 2).

Collio is about 45 min's drive from our house in Arta Terme. The two areas of Collio Orientali del Friuli (the South part) and Collio (Goriziano) are especially beautiful. The rolling vine-covered hills boast a world-famous selection of white wines, and outstanding red wines and desert wines as well. These can be followed on a winding Strada del Vino (3). It runs for about 40 km from Cividale East of Udine via Dolegna del Collio to Gorizia, the latter of which is split in two by Italy and Slovenia.

Winemakers cater for visitors, and many offer Bed & Breakfast acomodations. The route abounds with vineyards offering wine tastings and excellent food. For example, take the short trip up the hills to Ruttars South of Dolegna del Collio.

While there, don't miss "The Ideal City of the Renaissance" Palmanova (4). This unique fortified city is acknowledged as a UNESCO World Heritage site (5).
